Development Director - Part Time

Job Description:

Mission: Sparking Literacy is dedicated to lowering the high school drop out rate by improving literacy in at-risk teens.  We provide author events and free books in Title One schools and to schools with a population of teens at-risk of dropping out due to literacy related issues.  We are going to be creating a major event in the SE Michigan area. We partner with several tutoring organizations.  The company is young and growing rapidly.

 Job Posting: : Responsible for overseeing fundraising and donor relations including, but not limited to: event planning, fundraising plans, donor appreciation, grant research, grant writing, planned giving, direct mail appeals, online campaigns, prospect research, donor database management, etc.

Responsibilities include fundraising, online marketing and communication, graphic design and publication production, event planning and support, and other general duties.


Plan fundraising events, find sponsors, and manage volunteers. Write and manage the printing, mailing and online distribution of fundraising appeals. Create online fundraising pages. Develop annual and multi-year fundraising plans.. Perform research on prospects, input the information into the donor database, and use it to engage potential donors. Perform grant research. Write and submit grant proposals. Manage donor recognition activities, including thank you letters, phone calls, events, gifts, displays, etc.

Online Marketing and Communication:

Increase social media account following, including but not limited to Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Google+. Research content, share images and write posts on social media accounts. Set goals for increasing social media presence; track and report progress using analytics. Establish and manage donor management system. Develop and manage targeted e-marketing lists. Design e-marketing templates. Track and report response to online marketing methods. Other duties in support of online marketing and communications.

Graphic Design and Publication Production: 

Prepare brochures, programs, banners and other materials as needed using Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and/or Illustrator. Create and edit graphics as needed for use on website,

Event Planning and Support: 

Coordinate fundraising event logistics. Create Programs/Save the Dates, Sponsor packets and e-promotions. Create guest lists, seating charts, and name tags. Manage day of event set-up, registration process, and other support as needed.


Meet with Executive Director. Communicate with clients, donors, vendors and Organization employees by phone, email and in person. Research information for use in development work. Prepare reports on work activities and progress toward Organization objectives. Collaborate with other employees and volunteers. Participate in professional associations in fundraising, marketing, communication, and/or public relations. Stay informed on the latest developments within the fundraising, marketing, communication, and public relations fields. Other general duties in support of the Organization’s mission.


Bachelor’s Degree preferred (degree in Nonprofit Management, Business Administration, Marketing, Communications or related field preferred).

Professional experience in fundraising and/or nonprofit marketing, communications or public relations preferred.

Specific Knowledge / Skills Required: Customer service; English language and grammar; Excellent written and oral communication skills; Proficiency in MS Word; Fundraising practices, principles and ethics.
